Watch Out Skype, Here Comes Viber!

The app looks almost identical to the standard phone application on your iPhone, with a keypad, recent calls list and your contacts list, where it’s indicated which of your friends also have Viber installed. When your phone rings, you have the choice of answering with Viber rather than your ‘phone’, so international calls won’t cost anything. It even supports Bluetooth! The one service Skype – and Apple’s own FaceTime – offer that Viber doesn’t is video calls.
So, you’re probably wondering how much of your life you have to sign away to use it, right? Well, it may sound too good to be true, but you don’t have to register – your number is your username – and there are no charges, nor are there any ads.
Quite how Viber will make money isn’t clear, and it’s very easy to be sceptical about an application which sounds too good to be true, but Viber really does appear to push the genre forward. Future updates will bring free SMS and custom ringtones, plus the app will be coming to Android and Blackberry OS too.
Viber is available right now from the App Store. Anyone given it a try yet? Let us know what you thought in the comments.
